POP Montreal needed a website redesign in time to celebrate its 20th anniversary. With a festival featuring over 400 artists and 60,000 viewers, it was crucial for them to have a smooth user experience that includes daily schedules, live stream videos, and artist profiles. Using headless WordPress we were able to create a high-quality experience that supports their site administrators and engages visitors on any device.

Why this project was a success

  • 1

Utilized Headless WP for a familiar admin interface & fast loading times for users.

  • 2

Created an import function for FestivalPro that streamlined their workflow.

  • 3

Developed a CMS that allows for autonomous and flexible website updates.

A Seamless Festival Experience

Creating a high-quality user experience was a top priority for POP Montreal since their users navigate through events that span 7 categories. With everything from concerts to film screenings to fashion shows, users needed to be able to easily find their must-see events from any device.

We created a festival experience meant for on-the-go viewing that allows attendees to easily visualize their daily schedule. Throughout the festival, they can view their schedule and quickly filter through the venue, event type, and event category. They can also view artist profiles, where users can uncover emerging artists and see upcoming performances.

Look and Listen

With an embedded Spotify player across all the pages, visitors can choose to listen to a curated playlist that follows them as they explore the site.

POP Montreal wanted a hybrid component to give customers the choice to experience the festival from anywhere. So to support a virtual viewing experience, all event pages can be embedded with live stream videos.

Inspired By Vibrant Nostalgia

In celebration of their 20th anniversary, POP Montreal wanted to go back to their roots by featuring previous brand colours with pops of bright yellow, blue, and pink. Sticking with the nostalgic feel, we used a pale beige as their background colour.
Still staying true to their current branding, all call-to-action and social buttons use the vibrant POP Montreal orange.

We were also provided with POP’s brand guide containing illustrations and assets by artist, Jason Delmarr, specially made for their 20th. The illustrations feature some of Montreal’s iconic bagels, construction cones (sigh), and emblems. All elements came together for a modern and vibrant site that embodies POP’s contribution to Montreal’s artistic community.

Consistent Touchpoints Using Headless WordPress

Our team developed POP Montreal’s site using Headless WordPress, a development approach where the content management system is separate from its frontend code. There are many benefits to Headless WordPress, for admins it’s most notably the ease of managing an omnichannel experience.

POP Montreal promotes artists, events, and performances that need to be featured across many different touchpoints. Instead of managing content across channels, they can now orchestrate a seamless experience that remains consistent across all devices.

An Easy-to-use CMS

With a bold cross-section of art forms that feature over 400 artists from across the globe, POP Montreal needed a content management system (CMS) that was easy-to-use and flexible.
Keeping in mind that our client uses Festival Pro to manage all their artists, we created an import tool using JSON exports to save them from duplicating their content. We were able to save them hours of work while simplifying their workflow.

All their content was carefully categorized by event type (Puces POP, Kids POP, Art POP, etc) and by artist. Plus, to offer flexibility to site administrators, the website was built using modular design which allows different sections to be displayed depending on their needs. Together this gives POP ultimate control and autonomy over their content updates.
