A member of the Claremont Colleges consortium, Claremont Graduate University (CGU) is an academic institution with a distinct identity and legacy. Having previously worked with them to refresh their website and improve their program application process, we were honoured to help them celebrate their centennial with a digital storytelling website. We developed for them an interactive user experience where students of past and present can engage with CGU’s origin story while also finding ways to contribute and connect with the institution in meaningful ways.

An Immersive Digital Storytelling Website

Creating a digital storytelling website is a dynamic and thoughtful process. For CGU’s centennial, we used this approach to capture their rich history in an engaging and interactive web experience. Our team focused on creating a unique design that reflects the institution’s legacy in a way that is meaningful for both CGU and their community. Rather than presenting a traditional linear timeline, we emphasized storytelling elements that would draw users into the narrative.

The result was a microsite where users can explore key moments in CGU’s storied history. The site was carefully crafted to balance captivating visuals with user-friendly navigation to provide an immersive and intuitive experience. Furthermore, the design was intentionally restrained in terms of animation to ensure an accessible and smooth browsing experience for CGU’s diverse audience.

Fostering Alumni Support and Engagement

As part of the centennial celebration, the team developed the site in such a way that fosters alumni engagement and encourages contributions to the institution’s ongoing growth. Their site serves as a central hub for alumni to reconnect with their alma mater through submitting and exploring stories through a Community Memories page. Users can take a walk down memory lane by reading about the impact that CGU had upon former students and faculty members.

With the strategic goal of alumni engagement, we were able to design the site in such a way that highlights key funding opportunities and projects, allowing alumni to directly contribute to the next chapter of the institution. The design feels personal and inviting, and offers alumni a meaningful way to support the institution while reinforcing the strong sense of community that has persisted throughout the school’s history.

A Collaborative and Evolving Web Project

As the project evolved from a simple storytelling site into a more comprehensive microsite, one of the key priorities was to ensure an intuitive and efficient CMS for the client. This allows them to easily update and present their evolving content. The collaboration between our team and the client was essential in bringing their vision to life, as it required flexibility and a clear understanding of their needs.

The result was a user-friendly and dynamic microsite with a full homepage, a Community Memories section, and even a video produced by the client to showcase the institution’s impact. The partnership between our teams ensured the final product not only met their immediate needs, but provided them with the tools to continue to engage their audience for years to come.

Claremont Graduate University is like no other graduate-level university in the nation. Founded in 1925, CGU is an independent institution devoted entirely to graduate study.
